Our Premium Padded HEMA jacket takes inspiration from medieval fighting garments and is made in sturdy cotton canvas, with a layer of cotton batting inside, for a combination of protection and breathability. Meant for heavier use, more intense drills & sparring, for a lighter-weight version, designed for everyday use and drilling see our Premium Unpadded HEMA jacket.

Our premium version of the style is made to order in a wide range of tones, including custom color variations. Want to save some $ and/or want your jacket quicker?  Checkout our Basic Padded HEMA jacket. The most popular sizes in black are usually in-stock for faster delivery.

Using the unique, wide, curved armhole, it provides optimal mobility though the shoulders and arms critical for your training and fencing. Click on VIDEO tab above to see how easily you can move when wearing this jacket. Hidden front zipper closure in front with eyelets for optional ties provides a finished look & complete coverage. High neck for padding under neck protection. We’ve included slits for ease of movement at the wrists and hem, the ones at the wrists can folded back to provide padding under your gauntlets. Available in jewel tones and custom colors. Please note, custom orders are not eligible for return or exchange.

We recommend dry cleaning this item in order to extend its life to a maximum. If you do choose to wash your jacket – only do so in cold water by itself(colors may bleed in the wash when new) and hang to dry. Do not machine dry as that is the most destructive part of modern washing. Please note: as this is made of 100% cotton it will fade over time with repeated washings.

Please note these are made as they are ordered so allow a minimum of 2-3 weeks for your order to ship.

Note: Measure your waist at the WIDEST point to determine your size. Wrap the tape snugly around your waist. You chest measurement is typically less import as this large, curved armhole give extra room in chest and upper back, which allows for freedom of movement in shoulders, arms and upper body. This style is meant to fit snugly in the torso and waist while still providing freedom of movement in shoulders and arms, so we recommend choosing the smallest size that matches your measurements. The interest in HEMA(Historical European Martial Arts has grown dramatically over the last decade. Dozens of manuscripts and printed books survive from the period 1300-1600, detailing the historical use of a wide variety of weapons, wielded in and out of armour, on foot and on horseback. Wrestling with and without weapons is a key component of these martial arts.

We’ve retained the most important aspects of the historical patterns, particularly the exaggerated armhole, also called ‘le grande assiette sleeve’, which permits complete freedom of arm movement.  Its uniquely cut armholes make it well suited for training Historical European Martial Arts. Our Renaissance Wrestling Jacket is designed after the jacket worn by historical wrestling master Fabian Von Auerswald.

We’ve retained the most important aspects of the historical patterns, particularly the exaggerated armhole, also called ‘le grande assiette sleeve’, which permits complete freedom of arm movement. These uniquely cut armholes make it well suited for training renaissance wrestling and fencing. It’s made from medium weight cotton canvas for a combination of protection and breathability. Note: This chart is meant as a general reference and there is considerable leeway with garment because you can tie it to fit you exactly. Because this garment has a ‘ port-piece’ (a period term for the front placket, also called a modesty panel in modern terms) you can tie it shut  anywhere within the range given and you will still be completely covered. The nature of fit of a garment that ties shut is very forgiving and will permit a good fit even if you are a bit smaller or larger than the given sizes. The smallest measurement indicates the size with the jacket tied to meet in the middle and the widest where the placket extends to, or the largest size it will tie shut and still have the placket cover the front completely. It won’t precisely tie to meet in the middle on most people (unless you happen to be that exact size) but that is not necessary in order to fit correctly or look good.

Note: This chart is meant as a general reference and there is considerable leeway with garment because you can tie it to fit you exactly. Because this garment has a ‘ port-piece’ (a period term for the front placket, also called a modesty panel in modern terms) you can tie it shut  anywhere within the range given and you will still be completely covered. The nature of fit of a garment that ties shut is very forgiving and will permit a good fit even if you are a bit smaller or larger than the given sizes. The smallest measurement indicates the size with the jacket tied to meet in the middle and the widest where the placket extends to, or the largest size it will tie shut and still have the placket cover the front completely. It won’t precisely tie to meet in the middle on most people (unless you happen to be that exact size) but that is not necessary in order to fit correctly or look good.
