Our children’s wear line is based on smaller simplified, versions of our adult clothing, as it was in period. Head-coverings were a critical component of dress in the Middle Ages. Hoods were common with men and women of all classes, and came in a wide variety of forms: long and short tailed, dagged or straight hems, either pull-over or with an open front that was buttoned or pinned closed. Only the sumptuousness of the fabric, elaborateness of the dagging, or extreme length of the tail distinguished the hood of a duke from that of a villein. In general, the most extreme version of this style with the longest tail was typical in the mid to late fourteenth century, while the shorted tail was most common before and after this time. This design has an open front that can be closed with your own pin, or you can add your buttons to customize its look. Any of these hoods can be ordered with short or long tail in any of the colors listed (subject to fabric availability).

Fifteenth century fashion is nothing, if not dramatic, and a part of that drama comes from the panoply of headgear worn by both sexes throughout the period. We’ve chosen four different styles for our men’s line that run the gamut from practical to outright outlandish; The Stuffed Chaperone, The Italianate Hat, The Acorn Hat and The Sock Hat. The Italianate Hat is a distinctive piece of 15th century headwear, usually worn by the mercantile and upper classes. Originating in Italy, it was particularly popular with military men, as shown on portraits of Federigo da Montefeltro and Francesco Sforza. It can be worn tall for a really distinctive 15th century look or with the brim turned up, for the shorter, more every day look.

Head-coverings were a critical component of dress in the Middle Ages. Hats were common with men and women of all classes, and came in a wide variety of forms, and made of a wide variety of materials. Men wore their hats alone or over a hood or coif. Our men’s hats are based on a pattern that dates from circa 1315 to 1440 and is such a universal style that it is appropriate from the Late 13th century into the early Renaissance.

He adds yet another splash of color with his bright blue wool garters and slate blue short tailed hood. The look is completed with a black belt, pair of black ankle boots, and of course, a wool brimmed hat.

A man ready for winter in a full wool wardrobe. he wears a simple hunter green wool tunic, slightly rolled at the cuff to reveal his undershirt, and a bright orange wool dagged hood. Not shown are his camel wool chauses, tied to his braise, and the garters that hold them in place. To finish the look he of course has the brimmed hat, as well as a decorated belt and a pair of brown ankle boots.

Head-coverings were a critical component of dress in the Middle Ages. Hoods were common with men and women of all classes, and came in a wide variety of forms: long tailed or liripipe, short-tailed, dagged or straight hems, either pull-over or with an open front that was buttoned or pinned closed. Only the sumptuousness of the fabric, elaborateness of the dagging, or extreme length of the tail distinguished the hood of a duke from that of a villein. Men wore their hoods alone or with a plain linen coif beneath or a hat over, while women seem to have worn the hoods alone or with a wimple. In general, the most extreme version of this style with the longest tail or, liripipe, was typical in the mid to late fourteenth century while our short-tailed version is more typical of earlier fourteenth century portrayals. It is offered in the same colors as our popular linen tunics, cottes and gowns. Made of 100% linen this hood is joined in the front for the ease of pull-over wear and is a cool and authentic solution to keeping the sun at bay.

    Size Chart

Note: In our women’s clothes we’ve abandoned ‘standard’, modern sizing because it is far from standard, and tends to cause more confusion than provide accurate information. So, please judge your size by your chest and waist measurements. We do not give waist and hip measurements because the kirtle  is an ‘A’ line style and flares out from the bust so that fit at the hip is generally not an issue.

We are pleased to offer our medieval kirtle, a simple, elegant gown that pulls on without lacing. Medieval artwork of the 10th – 14th centuries often depicts simple, smooth gowns with tapered sleeves and full skirts. In the 12th and 13th century, this gown is often worn as a simple overdress by common women and wealthy ladies as well being used as an under gown with apron dresses, bliauts and pendant sleeved gowns. In the later 14th and 15th centuries the kirtle remains an overdress for commoners, while being depicted beneath the cotehardies, sideless surcoats, and houppelandes of the high born. Very often these images show undergowns of widely contrasting colors and in our quest to provide you with the means to create that wonderfully medieval look our kirtle is available in a rainbow of colors.

This versatility and long period of use makes our kirtle perfect for many different periods and portrayals. Wear it as an undergown with our popular Apron Dress, bliaut, scoop-sleeve dress , half-sleeve gown, or our houppelande, to look the part of a well-born lady, or on its own, perhaps with a hood, thin belt and linen chemise for the simpler fashions of the 13th century. Finally, whatever your period of choice, the kirtle is the perfect solution on hot, summer days, where you keep cool while still maintaining the proprieties of a lady!

The kirtle’s neckline is shaped to peek out from the neckline of your gown so that it can be seen beneath the overdress. The sleeves are slightly fitted to avoid bunching when worn with an overdress and provide a slight flare at the wrist for that distinctly medieval flare. As with our plain, white linen underdress our kirtle is fitted to the bust and then flares outward, ending just above the floor so that it fits smoothly under your gown without interfering with your train. Our kirtle is made with no visible machine stitching.

A garment that stretches back into Antiquity, the cloak is the completion and final layer to almost any pre-modern wardrobe. (Even today, it clings to life in the opera cape.) As a wrap, it serves as an outer layer, can be easily moved aside to free the arms, or removed and used as blanket. We have chosen to introduce our cloaks with a simple, half-circle design that first appeared in Europe during the late 11th century. It quickly supplanted the older rectangular cloak, and variations of its design remained in use for the next eight centuries. We have chosen a very basic style that is period appropriate to our entire men’s and women’s product line, including all our Full Wardrobes from the late 11th to the 15th century. Most medieval cloaks did not have an integral hood. Instead, it was worn with a separate wool hood that usually had a cowl that fell completely over the shoulders. Although the lack of integral hood at first seems odd, when you wear all of the layers together in cold or very wet weather, the reason becomes clearer. You now have two layers over your neck, throat and shoulders, which works much better to keep rain, snow and cold air out. When the liripipe tail of a dagged hood, or linen hood is wrapped around your neck and tucked in, it also becomes a scarf. In a world where “escaping the cold” was limited to the size of your hearth fire and the amount of warm fabrics you could pile around you, every little bit helps. The next time you’re out in the elements in your garb, try wearing all of these layers, and you’ll be surprised at how much it helps keeping your throat and collar triple wrapped in wool! Made of rich, warm wool, this 59” long cloak will fall between mid-calf an ankle on most customers. The cloak fastens shut with tasseled cords, the most common method of closure in the 12th -14th centuries. For a a fancier look see our Medieval Cloak Closure in antiqued silver.

Fifteenth century fashion is nothing, if not dramatic, and a part of that drama comes from the panoply of headgear worn by both sexes throughout the period. We’ve chosen four different styles for our men’s line that run the gamut from practical to outright outlandish; The Stuffed Chaperone, The Italianate Hat, The Acorn Hat and The Bag Hat. Our simplest 15th century hat style is the Bag or Sock Hat which was particularly popular with soldiers in the third quarter of the century. A simple, long-tailed cap, this cap and scarf in one was the perfect way to stay warm while on garrison duty or a long march. You can change the look and the fit by how much of it you roll up (the more you roll it, the bigger the roll, the tighter it will fit).

    Size Chart

Note: In our women’s clothes we’ve abandoned ‘standard’, modern sizing because it is far from standard, and tends to cause more confusion than provide accurate information. So, please judge your size by your chest and waist measurements. We do not give hip measurements because the gown flares dramatically at the hip and is so generously sized there that fit is not an issue at that point. A range of fit is given for each size because the lacings and placket in the back start at the top and extend to below the hip providing flexibility within each size as well as a near perfect fit to each individual within that size range. The gowns run long with a small train so that you can wear them in the authentic fashion of the period – trailing along the ground or hem it to your desired length.

The 15th century was a time of great cultural and social change in Europe. In the north, the old institutions of the Middle Ages were waning, while south of the Alps the Renaissance was already being born in Italy. It was a century that saw the rise of humanism, the first of the great Renaissance artists, the birth of the printing press and the discovery of the New World. But it also saw bloody civil war throughout England and the Empire, the rise and fall of the Dukes of Burgundy, and the stirrings of religious discontent that would blossom into the viscious religious wars of the following century. Amidst this culture of change and innovation in art, arms and armour, a variety of new clothing styles emerged, largely driven by the luxurious courts of Burgundy and those of the wealthy Italian despots.

We have chosen to introduce our forthcoming 15th century line with this dress because of its versatility and uniqueness. Based on contemporary artwork, we have chosen several distinctive elements of early-to-mid 15th century clothing: a wide, somewhat squared neckline revealing the top of the underdress, front-lace closure, and short sleeves flaring into long streamers, an evolution of the tight sleeves and tippets popular with the 14th century cotehardie.

Although some of these individual elements first began appearing in the second half of the 14th century, they did not commonly appear, let alone in combination, until circa 1400. Together, they create an elegant and distinctive garment typical of the first half of the 15th century. This means that such a gown is still contemporary with the last fashionable years of our current 14th century cottes, while at the same time overlapping with the introduction of the gowns and doublets that typify the middle and late 1400s, allowing you many different ways to elegantly match your lord across much of the century, and making for a good introductory garment to 15th century fashion.

This gown’s front closure uses the same placket design as our back-laced gowns, allowing it to be fully adjustable. The lacing, split sleeves and linen construction makes for a perfect dress on hot summer days. Our standard lace is a natural color or you can get black for an additional charge. Made in 100% wool, the split-sleeved frontlace gown is available in the colors listed below in all of our standard sizes. Please note that in our historical references, below, the gown is always pictured as a short-sleeved gown, with the underdress omitted. This is simply so that he lines of the overdress are not obscured in the drawings. Please note that the gown is always shown worn with a long-sleeved underdress. In period, ladies did not brazenly display their arms!
